Rescue Mode for Virtual Servers
Cherry Servers' Virtual Server customers can now use Rescue Mode, a new self-service tool for recovering and troubleshooting servers directly from the client portal.
#What Is Rescue Mode For?
Rescue Mode is designed for situations where your virtual server won't boot or behave normally, including:
- Repairing a corrupted file system.
- Recovering or resetting lost passwords.
- Resolving VM startup and operation issues.
Instead of waiting on support to intervene, you can now boot into a temporary recovery environment yourself and fix the issue directly.
#How Rescue Mode Works?
Rescue Mode is available from the Actions menu on any virtual server in the client portal, just select Enter Rescue Mode.
Once activated, your server boots into a temporary Ubuntu 24 recovery environment, with your existing virtual disks attached and networking automatically configured. You'll be logged in as a rescue user with sudo privileges, and can authenticate using either an SSH key already on your account or a generated temporary password, whichever you prefer.
From there, you can view and mount your server's existing disks and partitions to inspect or repair them, recover files, reset passwords, or troubleshoot boot issues, using standard Linux tools.
#A Few Important Things to Know
Changes made to your virtual disks while in Rescue Mode are permanent, treat it the same as working directly on your server's storage.
While Rescue Mode is active, the portal displays a clear notification so it's always visible that your server is running in a recovery environment rather than its normal state.
A regular reboot or Power Off/Start will not exit Rescue Mode. To return your server to normal operation, you need to select Exit Rescue Mode from the portal, only then will your server boot back into its main system disk as usual.
Rescue Mode is available now for all virtual servers. If you run into any issues using it, our support team is available 24/7 to help.
